🥂 Opening Night: Friday 21 August | 6:00–8:00pm
Ashes & Bones brings together the work of Phillip HOWe and Gautam Jhanjee in a contemplative exhibition centred on life, death and renewal.
Through sculpture, painting and drawing, the artists create a dialogue between First Peoples knowledge, Eastern philosophies and shared human experience. Rather than viewing death as an ending, the exhibition reflects the enduring cycles that connect spirit, memory and place.
HOWe's work is shaped by a deep connection with Country, where land, lineage and ancestral presence intertwine. It invites contemplation of the enduring connections that bind people, place and memory. Jhanjee's paintings draw upon mythology, sacred imagery and symbolic traditions that transcend time and culture.
Together, Ashes & Bones invites quiet reflection, revealing that what returns to the earth is never truly lost, but continues through memory, transformation and the enduring cycle of life.

Between the Shadows, Beyond the Light
Solo Exhibition
&Gallery Australia
Sorrento, Victoria
🗓️ 10 May – 8 June 2025
Between the Shadows, Beyond the Light brought together a new body of paintings, sculptures, drawings and original prints exploring the enduring relationship between Country, memory and spirit.
Through bold colour, expressive mark-making and symbolic forms, the exhibition reflected Phillip HOWe's ongoing dialogue with landscape, identity and the rhythms of the natural world. Rather than presenting each medium in isolation, the exhibition invited a conversation between painting, sculpture and printmaking, revealing different perspectives of the same ideas and stories.
Presented at &Gallery Australia in Sorrento, the exhibition featured works from the River Spirit, Yarro Yarro and Spirit Line series, alongside sculptural works that extended these themes into three-dimensional form.

Two Conversations of the Birrarung River
Collaborative Exhibition
Phillip HOWe & Anthony Williams
Gallery 275
Ivanhoe, Victoria
📅 6 April – 19 May 2024
Two Conversations of the Birrarung River brought together the work of Phillip HOWe and Anthony Williams in a multidisciplinary exhibition exploring the enduring spirit, memory and living presence of the Birrarung (Yarra River).
Through painting, sculpture, drawing and original printmaking, the exhibition presented two distinct artistic responses to the river, inviting visitors to reflect on Country through contemporary artistic practice while acknowledging the river's deep cultural, ecological and spiritual significance.
Alongside the exhibited works, the exhibition extended beyond the gallery walls through artist talks and immersive multimedia experiences, encouraging audiences to engage with the Birrarung through multiple ways of seeing, listening and reflecting.
Exhibition Experience
A highlight of the exhibition was a ticketed Meet the Artist evening that transformed Gallery 275 into an immersive after-dark environment.
The gallery lights were extinguished as projected light, moving image and an original soundscape illuminated a monumental triptych of Birrarung River paintings extending more than twelve metres across the main gallery wall. The interplay of darkness, light and sound revealed and concealed the works, creating a contemplative experience that echoed the shifting rhythms and reflections of the river itself.
Visitors also experienced I Am the River, an original poem written and performed by Phillip HOWe, together with a film created from years of documenting the Birrarung through an artist's eye. Close observations of water, reflections, native flora and changing light were interwoven with imagery of HOWe's artworks, forming a moving visual meditation on Country.
Anthony Williams presented his own interpretive film, with both works screened together as part of the evening programme, creating a dialogue between two artists whose practices were united by a shared respect for the Birrarung while remaining distinct in their individual perspectives.
